Vashon Island Coffee Dust

Vashon Island, WA · Spice blends that flavor your coffee

Coffee Dust sampler kit next to a mug of dusted coffee

Christy Clement used to hate coffee. She would only drink it loaded with cream and sugar, which meant she mostly didn't drink it at all. Then in 2020 she and Jason started a morning coffee tradition in the hot tub, and she loved the ritual a lot more than what she was stirring into the cup.

The fix came from a friend. Kim served them coffee brewed with her own blend of spices, and it was good enough that Christy didn't need nearly as much cream and sugar to enjoy it. She went home with the recipe and started experimenting. Some blends were amazing, some were not (she'll tell you to keep sage out of your coffee!). When she couldn't find anyone else selling anything like it, Vashon Island Coffee Dust was born.

The spices are bought in bulk, ground very fine so they dissolve in your cup, then are mixed and packed in small batches on Vashon Island by Christy and her Coffee Duster team. Fun fact from the packing room: everyone's sinuses are clear after a run of Hot Momma or Spicy Papa. 🔥

"Our mission is to help people have healthier, more joyful mornings."

Why we carry them

Every ingredient on the tin is one you can pronounce, and a single 1/8 teaspoon does the job. That is the kind of thing we look for. Christy and her team also share our sustainability streak: Hive is their very first refillery partner, so you can bring your empty tin back and refill it by the teaspoon at our refill bar.

And they live and work nearby on Vashon Island...and we like having neighbors on the shelf! (Plus, they are just truly amazing humans!)

What's in the tins

Every flavor is spices and salt, nothing else. No sugar, no sweeteners, no flavorings. Ingredient lists below are from the maker, in the order they list them.

  • Captain's: Cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, cardamom, sea salt
  • Healthful: Cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, black pepper, sea salt
  • Hot Momma: Ghirardelli cocoa, cayenne, cinnamon, sea salt
  • Spicy Papa: Cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, allspice, sea salt
  • Cocoa Calm: Ghirardelli cocoa, lavender powder, salt
  • Gingerbread: Cinnamon, ginger, allspice, clove, nutmeg, sea salt

How to dust

Pre-brew: add 1/2 tsp per mug to your grounds (drip, pour-over, French press, espresso). Post-brew: add 1/8 tsp per mug on top of your coffee, or froth it into your milk. Those are the maker's starting points; adjust to taste. One tin is 120 servings. (Heads up from the maker: it clogs Aeropress paper filters, so add it to the mug instead.)

On the refill bar

Bring the tin back. We'll fill it.

Coffee Dust is on tap at our refill bar in four blends: Captain's, Healthful, Hot Momma, and Spicy Papa. Bring your empty tin (or any small jar) and we fill it at the counter by the teaspoon, one teaspoon minimum. One teaspoon is 8 servings. A full tin is 15 teaspoons, and a refill runs $18 next to $21 for a new tin.

In-store only. Refills don't ship.
